DOVER- Three candidates were elected on Tuesday to fill open seats in town government. Voters selected Tom Baltrus to the selectboard, Chip Vicary to fill a school board seat, and Cordelia Garofalo to the board of listers.

Vicary had the closest race of the day. He beat Scott Wilson by only three votes, 76-73. Wilson, a teacher at Deerfield Valley Elementary School, had been appointed to the school board in July to fill an open seat. State law required the seat to be filled until the next election. Vicary, a financial controller at Mount Snow, will finish out the six months left on the term. The seat will again be up for election at Town Meeting in March.

Baltrus also won a somewhat contested race. He drew 106 votes to 36 for Edward Barber, who had pulled out of the race last week citing health reasons. Barber’s name remained on the ballot, due to the late decision after the ballots had been printed. Baltrus, a retired businessman and MOOver bus driver, will serve two-and-a-half years in the seat.

Garofalo ran uncontested and pulled the highest vote total of the day with 148. Garofalo, a real estate broker, will hold the seat until March 2015.

According to town clerk Andy McLean, 157 voters cast ballots in the special election. He also said that no recount was anticipated in the school board balloting.
