The DVSC held its annual Harriman Reservoir Ice Fishing Derby this past weekend.
This was the first time in we can’t remember how long to have the derby the last weekend in February. In and of itself it brings springlike snow and a low water table, however the warmer temperature certainly was a plus. The youth handheld ice auger contestants certainly can let you know how deep (22” in most parts) and how hard the ice was. Overall it was a great derby, many times the officials were told that nobody missed the tagged fish and that they welcomed the cash prize changes made this year.
Special thank you to the following: Pete Boisvert, Joe Szarejko, Doug Dix and boys for cleanup assistance. Connor Hunt and Mike Fayette worked tirelessly as “on the ice” officials. EZ Riders kept the food and coffee hot and filling. Mike and Vinny Pistocco, Tim Putnam, and Bill Cox did a great job setting up and breaking down headquarters. Amber Cox, Jeanette Felton, Chuck Putnam, Donnie Boyd, Bill and Debbie Cox for ticket sales and weigh-in station at headquarters and the awards ceremony.
The Deerfield Valley Sportsmen’s Club is a non-profit organization that is strictly run with volunteer hours. We are always looking for suggestions, new ideas and members to become part of “our family” of sportsmen and women. Monthly meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month, check out the website www.dvscvt.com for meeting location and time.
There are many facets of running a derby of this size and you could help in the area that suits you and still be able to enjoy being a contestant.
Come help us plan the 28th derby for 2012.
