That victory led to raucous celebrations in the streets of Boston overnight and to many bleary-eyed folks walking into work across the region on Thursday morning. Even if they weren’t there in person, television sets were on late as many fans sat through another tense game and then stayed up to vicariously join in the festivities.
While not quite the same as the team’s championship run in 2004, which lifted the fabled “Curse of the Bambino” and brought the team’s first title since 1918, this year’s series victory was almost as cathartic.
For a region that was shocked by the Boston Marathon bombings in April, the series win serves as a big milestone on the road to recovery from that dreadful day. The Red Sox players adopted the “Boston Strong” motto, coined in the immediate days after the Marathon, as their rallying cry throughout the season. For fans of New England professional sports teams, the last dozen years have provided an embarrassment of riches. The Red Sox now join the New England Patriots with three championships since 2001. The basketball Celtics and hockey Bruins have each added one. That’s eight titles across four sports in 12 years. Add to that multiple losses in finals or semifinals and it sums up an amazing run of championship opportunities. The runner-up? Sorry, New York. It’s not you. It’s Los Angeles, with five pro sports titles, those coming in basketball and soccer.

We can’t help but marvel at what an amazing period it has been to live and follow sports in New England.
Nobody knows what the future holds. There may not be another title in the region for a long time. But on Wednesday night, New England sports fans once again were able to savor the sweet emotions of a championship. Those are feelings to be cherished and enjoyed, and something most will remember for a long time.
