Venerable Memorial Hall was alive with music on Sunday, December 16. Barbara Lipstadt presented an exceptional holiday program by many outstanding local musicians. Running the gamut from classical to new arrangements of old holiday favorites, this was an outstanding program.
Baritone Fran Alfieri opened the program with a solo followed by instrumentalists Robin Matathias, Pedro Pereira, and Karen Horton with two new arrangements of familiar carols. Sue Maddern conducted the Valley Dolls in a beautiful series of pre-Renaissance French carols. The piano solo of Logan Boyd was enthusiastically received as was Robin Matathias’ flute quartet’s “The Dance of the Snow Flakes” from “The Nutcracker.” Marietta Formanek, Meredith Ross, Jessica Thompson, and Charles Riley also performed magnificently in a number of solos. We also express appreciation to Dale Doucette for his assistance with the sound.
There was a second purpose to this event. It was to bid farewell to Doris Horton, member of the board of Memorial Hall. Many of the people with whom she has worked in the myriad activities in which she was involved were at the hall to talk about all the good work she has done over the years. In Memorial Hall she has been curator of costumes, head usher, and refreshment chairperson.
In addition, Doris has been ardent in giving her support and assistance to many of the institutions of Wilmington. She will be sorely missed.
This event was a joy to all who attended. The Memorial Hall Board hopes that we will be able to make this an annual event.
