Twin Valley was outscored 41-3 in two games on the road this past week, dropping games to Leland & Gray and Black River.

Playing Leland & Gray, the Wildcats couldn’t catch a break. While they were able to get their bats on the ball they would continue to miss the gaps, hitting directly at Rebel fielders.

Twin Valley’s defense saw the opposite in their defensive game. Rebel hitters consistently found the gaps, and the Wildcats kept giving up plays when the ball was hit to them. Leland & Gray was able to run away with the game.

Christina Moore was able to throw strikes, but pitched a loss for Twin Valley. A 10-error game by the Wildcats defense would prove to be too much damage.

Against Black River, the Wildcats fared worse, getting clobbered 28-2. Coach Aaron Wood said the loss was a matter of errors, poor defense, and an inability to throw strikes. “There are not dominant pitchers in division IV softball,” said Wood, “so you have to keep the other team off the bases by also doing those other things on defense, like not committing errors. We’re just not doing those things.”

Black River scored half their runs in the first inning on only two hits, and scored their 28 runs on only nine. Wood said the easiest way to give up runs is to not throw strikes, and that was certainly the case for Twin Valley, while Black River only walked three.

Jordan Niles and Colton Butler combined to give up 25 runs in five innings, and Abby Putnam pitched the last two innings, giving up only three runs. Putnam also went 2-3 at the plate.

Wood said his defense has to improve if they want to compete. “You have to make plays, you can’t make five- plus errors against good teams and expect to win.”

The Wildcats will have another crack at the Black River Presidents Thursday at 4:30 at Twin Valley Middle School in Whitingham.
