People are created equal

To the Editor,

For the month of February, St. Mary’s in the Mountains Episcopal Church in Wilmington is displaying the Black Lives Matter sign in honor of national Black History Month. We display this sign in order to recognize our own white privilege. This privilege has led to racial profiling and bias both in Vermont and across our nation.

Our decision to display the Black Lives Matter sign in no way opposes our law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day. Nor does it suggest that we at SMM value any one life over another.

We at SMM believe all people are equal and made in God’s image and all American citizens have the same rights and privileges. We look for the day when our great nation can fulfill the statement in our Declaration of Independence – “that all men are created equal.” This sign is one of many ways to address the inequities that exist in our society and nation.

We are committed to peaceful dialogue and positive change. Please join us as we discern the work that the Lord our God has given us to do.

Dick Ward, Warden

The Rev. Nicholas Porter, Priest
