The troupe, founded by identical twins Elsie Smith and Serenity Smith Forchion, features internationally known performers who travel the world performing for corporate special events, celebrity parties, and stage shows. In 2012, after returning from another whirlwind tour, the twins decided to create their own show dedicated to performing in rural towns with smaller theaters that would not normally be able to host high-level circus theater. Essentially, they wanted to mesh their brand of circus to their small-town lives because the eight members of the troupe are all based in and around Brattleboro.
The challenge was figuring out how to fit high-flying circus acts into small theaters that do not have budgets to install truss work that touring circuses rely upon. Forchion had the idea to build the show around a freestanding aerial apparatus that the artists could build up as the show progressed, dancing and flying upon it as it grew taller and more elaborate.
With that idea, “Ruckus: A Cirque Spectacular” came to life and the fall 2013 tour will travel throughout New England with a sidetrip to Texas.
The eight-member ensemble company includes the founders, Smith and Forchion, who have won international awards at top circus festivals; international Juggling Association champion Tony Duncan; Aimee Hancock, who toured with the acclaimed French Canadian company Cirque Eloize; and Bill Forchion, whose resume includes Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Bros., and the Big Apple Circus. Filling out the cast are Zeb Galipeau, Alyssa Morar, and Elsa Hall, all of whom are graduates of the New England Center for Circus Arts.
Acts include duo trapeze, aerial silks, juggling, German wheel, partner acrobatics, and funny characters (but no red-nosed clowns). The show is upbeat and fun and suitable for all ages.
There are two shows, at 3 pm and 7:30 pm on Saturday, October 19, at Landmark College’s Greenhoe Theater. Tickets are available at www.brattleborotix.com.
