Meanwhile, the Alpine U14 skiers were at Willard Mountain in Saratoga Springs, NY, on Monday, January 21 for a slalom race. (The U14 designation is part of the new age groupings begun this year, and includes skiers aged 12 and 13.) Alexandra Welter (Babylon, NY) took eighth place, and teammate Leah Montello (Stamford, CT) also made the first page.
Later this week, snowboarder Lyons leaves for Buttermilk Mountain at Aspen, CO, to take part in the USASA Rail Jam at Winter X Games 17 on Saturday, January 26. Lyons was one of several competitors from around the nation invited to participate as a result of his performance in Regional Series qualifiers. Lyons’ teammate Connor Clayton also qualified, but is unable to participate due to a commitment to another competition. MSA alums Cody Ellison and Lacey Vilandry also qualified for the rail jam , which is limited to 30 men and 15 women.
Mount Snow Academy is also preparing for its annual benefit dinner, an evening of dining, dancing, and shopping the live and silent auctions at the Grand Summit ballroom. This is a major fundraiser for the academy, and a fun evening for the participants. Last year, a portion of the profits were earmarked for flood relief efforts here in the valley. This year, student-athlete scholarships to MSA will be supported by the event. Auction items will include everything from fashion accessories and vintage furs to golf outings, vacation rentals, sports camps, and tickets to a Yankees vs. Red Sox game. The public is invited, and anyone interested in attending should contact the MSA office at (802) 464-1100, ext. 4521, to make their reservations.
