BRATTLEBORO- Jurors returned a verdict today, finding David Boglioli, 60, of Wilmington, guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of his neighbor, George Riccitelli, 51, on August 15, 2008.
The verdict was announced at 2 pm Thursday, after eight days of testimony and 18 hours of deliberation.
Boglioli claimed he shot Riccitelli in self-defense, and on Wednesday jurors sought clarification of the state’s burden of proof in disproving self-defense.
Boglioli faces a penalty of one to 15 years on the felony conviction of voluntary manslaughter. Boglioli had been charged with second-degree murder, which would have carried a prison sentence of 20 years to life.
The court ordered a presentencing investigation, a report conducted by the department of corrections that includes a convicted person’s socioeconomic, medical, and educational background, as well as any previous offenses. The report should be completed within 21 days, at which time the court will schedule a sentencing hearing. Boglioli will be held without bail until his sentencing.
