Nine members of Twin Valley High School’s track and field team competed at Mount Anthony High School on Thursday, squaring off against some of southern Vermont’s largest track squads. While Twin Valley’s tracksters didn’t win their races, what matters is their qualifying times, which they match against their opponents in the Division IV standings.

Chad Bernard, Eli Park, Dylan Florence, and Nick Nilsen all qualified for states with their 100-meter times under the minimum 13.5 seconds. Christiana Strysko, Caitlin Hunt, Kyla Lavoy, and Karlee Walkowiak all qualified for the girls team. In the 200-meters Walkowiak and Strysko both qualified as well. Skyler Boyd had a good showing to qualify in the long jump competition, while Florence threw a hefty 27-foot shot-put to qualify. Nilsen, Park, Bernard, and Boyd ran the 4x100 relay in 57 seconds, while the girls team, consisting of Walkowiak, Hunt, Lavoy, and Strysko, ran it in a minute and three seconds.

Coach Buddy Hayford said that both relay teams would experiment with different runners to see if they can shave time off their first runs. Hayford also said the first meet is a scrimmage for his team, a chance to get their feet wet.

“It’s always good to get the first meet under your belt because there are nerves for the freshmen especially,” said Hayford. “I was proud of all of them, because they were competing against some big schools with big teams and I thought they did a great job.”

Twin Valley ran, jumped, and threw against MAU, Brattleboro, Fair Haven Arlington, and Rutland at Thursday’s meet. The Wildcats’ next meet is Tuesday at Bellows Falls at 4 pm.
