The Wildcat golf team has a good mix of grade levels, as well as multiple golfers who have been with the program for several years. With a group of nine golfers, the Wildcat team is also larger than in recent years.
“This year we will be strong in the overall consistency of the team,” said Keegan. “In past years we’ve had some really good individual golfers like Beau Doucette, but this year we have four to five really consistent guys.”
Keegan’s top five golfers will compete in each of the team’s eight meets, and with a large group currently taking practice swings, Keegan believes the competition will help his golfers push each other to be better.
One veteran of the team is junior Wyatt Shippee, who has been golfing his entire life, and is entering his third year on the Wildcat team.
“We have a lot more people and everyone is getting better,” said Shippee. “ The goal this year is to make it to the championships, and we want to have a good time, too.”
Shippee will join his teammates in trying to keep his score at an average at or below 55, the magic number to compete in championship play on June 6.
Keegan expects his more experienced golfers to carry the weight, including senior Keegan Reed, who took a year off from the team last year, Shippee, and sophomore Brett Barry. But there will definitely be competition among a group that includes veteran Judah Kondracki, Hank Sweeney, and Tristan Delecour rounding out the juniors, while sophomores DJ Lazelle and Nick Nilsen, and freshman Tommy Marchionna make up the rest of the roster.
Many names on the squad have been golfing with Keegan since they were in eighth grade, but Keegan welcomes the influx of newcomers. “You don’t usually see this many on the team,” said Keegan. “The last few years we’ve had just enough to field a team, so it’s promising to see an increase.
“The goal is to have fun and take something from this sport, and if we can qualify as a team for the state championship, that would be great,” continued Keegan.
Keegan also expressed his thanks to both Mount Snow and the Hermitage for letting the team use their facilities for practice as well as for coming matches.
The Wildcat golfers’ first match will be Monday at 3:30 pm at Okemo.
