Here we are, smack dab in the middle of the holiday season, two weeks removed from Thanksgiving and a little more than two weeks until Christmas. That means there’s still plenty of time to wrap up those holiday to-do lists. We hope they include two things that will be a big help to the Deerfield Valley community.

Those things are shopping locally and giving to a local service organization or charity.

As regular readers know, we’ve written extensively about the benefits of shopping locally. Keeping dollars circulating in the local economy pays substantial dividends, not just for the local businesses, but for the broader community. Money tends to cycle in and out of local stores, supporting not just those businesses and employees, but other businesses and their staff, nonprofits, and charities.

Another thing we’re passionate about is supporting local service groups and charities. There is so much good work being done by so many, often fueled by volunteers and a commitment to help out their community. There are scores of folks doing good work out there, and so many groups helping those in need, it’s hard to keep track of them all. It’s also hard to write about each and every group and all of the good work they do. But we know they’re out there, and we salute everyone involved.

Something that is important to The Deerfield Valley News is supporting those in need of the most basic necessity, food. Helping folks get through tough times is something that we feel deeply about, and being able to provide staples in times of need is something everyone should be able to understand. That’s why we support so many local food drives and organizations.

One of our favorite events of the year is coming up this weekend, and we urge all to take part in it.

Friday evening is the annual benefit for the Deerfield Valley Food Pantry at Memorial Hall in Wilmington. It’s something that has been near and dear to our hearts. The Deerfield Valley News has been the major sponsor for more than two decades. Of course, the real stars of the concert are the organizers and musicians who give their time freely. The show wouldn’t happen without all of the hard work behind the scenes, arranging musicians, taking care of booking the hall, and countless other details that go into making the whole event seem effortless.

The great thing about the benefit concert is that anyone can go and enjoy themselves. Admission is free. Of course donations of cash or nonperishable food items will be gladly accepted, but are not necessary.

The other great thing about the food pantry benefit concert is the music. Featuring a blend of holiday favorites, rock, and jazz, the selections will be an eclectic mix suitable for all ages.

So what are you waiting for? Head to Memorial Hall on Friday for a great time and support a great cause at the same time. It’s an easy way to help out those in need this holiday season.

After all, isn’t the gift of giving really what the holidays are all about?
