“There are caves and attics” is a new multi-modal movement work by Bodel, danced alongside text and an original olfactory score. The performance vectors off from the themes of a 1966 radio essay by philosopher Michel Foucault.
The choreography is tightly intertwined with excerpts of the text, spoken in translation or lip-synched in original French,which unravel various fantasies humans historically harbor about the body — that it be invisible, colossal, eternal, untethered or whole. The dance is augmented by an original scent score, developed in collaboration with Mark Crames, CEO of Demeter Fragrance Library. Six custom scents, engaging audience members’ sensoria and associations, are hand-atomized by the soloist.
This solo performance is 35 minutes in length. Other iterations of “There are caves and attics” have been presented in New York City and Cave Art Space in Brooklyn, NY. The full production is planned for spring 2015.

Bodel is a choreographer, dancer, and dance theorist whose choreographic and scholarly interests include, alphabetically: archiving, Bread and Puppet Theater, choric movement, dance film, immigration, embodied cognition, pageantry, scents, semiotics, and the soul.
Bodel holds a BA in dance and astronomy from Wesleyan University and an MFA in dance from Hollins University and the American Dance Festival. His eclectic history of interdisciplinary work includes a dance film about immigration and grapefruits, a puppet opera, and two dueling John McEnroes.
He is the founder of the dormant Frameworks Dance Film Series and half of Farmers for Flight Attendants.
