DOVER- Sanderson Kemp, 16, of the Mount Snow Training Center, took the girls gold medal in the overall Vermont Cup this winter. The Vermont Cup is the Vermont Alpine Racing Association’s season-long series for slalom and giant slalom races for the combined U-21 and U-18 age groups.

Kemp finished at the top of the standings by besting a number of racers who are years her elder. She will now be named to the 2014-2015 VARA Team, which is the highest honor in Vermont racing and consists of the top performers from across the state.

An East Dover native, Kemp opened her season with a decisive three-second victory in a Vermont Cup SL held at Bromley Mountain in early January. She recorded four other top six finishes en route to the Vermont Cup title, including two other Bromley SL podium finishes in February and March. Kemp also won a GS at Jiminy Peak, MA, in the Tri-State Division of the United States Ski Association.

As a junior at Burr and Burton Academy in Manchester, Kemp helped lead her school to the 2014 Vermont High School championship title by scoring top ten results in both the SL and GS state championship races held last month at Burke Mountain and Middlebury Snow Bowl. As a member of Team Vermont, her top 10 finish helped guide them to the team SL title at the Eastern High School championships at Attitash, NH.

Another young standout from the Mount Snow Training Center is Jessie Kuzmicki, of Pownal, who won the bronze medal in the U-18 Vermont state slalom championships last month at Killington. Kuzmicki, a 16-year-old junior at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, ended the season in fifth place overall in the Vermont Cup standings. Throughout the season, she had eight top 10 finishes split evenly between SL and GS. In addition to recording an overall third place finish in the Suicide Six Vermont Cup SL in February, she was also on the U-18 podium an additional five times.

Both Kemp and Kuzmicki have a strong record of success on the racing circuit. Last year, as U-16 racers, both were named to the 2013 U-16 VARA state team after each posted top ten results during the state championships. They each went on to place in the top 15 at the 2013 USSA Eastern U-16 championships. Both were honored as members of the USSA-East team and competed in the international Can-Am race series against Canada where Kuzmicki finished in the top 15 in slalom.
