To the Editor,

After much consideration starting around the time of Town Meeting, I have concluded not to seek reelection to the Vermont Senate.

While there is some regret in any such decision, I have been blessed with eight years of service to a very fine constituency and am now looking forward to spending most of my time on Cape Cod, a special place for me and where I have had a strong connection with family since childhood along with the family connection of my wife. I will be able to continue to pursue my passion for the environment and land conservation while enjoying the waters in and around Pleasant Bay, one of the most beautiful bodies of water anywhere.

I can not express enough the gratitude I have to all of you, the people of the Bennington Senate District, for your kindness and support for my work and, yes, my endless knocking on your doors. It is worth every moment and forms much of my joy about all of you and the places you live.

There are some serious challenges ahead in the legislature including health care finance, education governance and finance, energy siting and weatherization to name only a few, and, therefore, it is critical for us to continue with the best representation we can.

Four years ago, I enthusiastically endorsed Brian Campion for the House of Representatives from North Bennington in a crowded event at the South Street Cafe in Bennington. I will always remember it; my faith in Brian has been confirmed during the fours years we have served together. He is always there, works very hard on the complex issues of the Committee on Education and has been diligent in his relationships with others both on his Committee and on others as well as with his constituents. He is highly respected by me and those in the State House.

I have the same enthusiasm today I did then and will be working to elect a great team in Dick Sears who has done so much for us and Brian Campion who will be working together for the good of the Bennington Senate District from now on. We need this team and it will be a privilege to work to elect them this year.

I wish all of you the best life has to offer.

With deep appreciation.

Bob Hartwell

State Senator

And now the rest of the story......

Mr. Hartwell will not be missed as much as he may want to believe. After voting for almost every tax this session he's making distance between what he voted for and what he wants to pay for.

His votes and comments pertained to keeping Vermont clean and pure for its residents and then he heads for Cape Cod probably to take over for the Kennedy clan. Migratory politics you gotta like it.
