Finally affected by shutdown

To the Editor,

It took a while but I have finally been directly affected by the federal government shutdown. I was travelling down FR 71 from Kelly Stand Road to Route 9 on Saturday showing some friends the beautiful Vermont foliage. As we passed the Landing Strip camping area one of the women asked if we could stop so she could use the outhouse at the site. To our surprise the outhouse was locked with a sign on the door stating it was closed due to the government shutdown.

It really makes one realize how really important and necessary all departments of the government are. Where will one take a crap in the national forest if the government is shut down? Luckily the outhouses at Somerset Reservoir were open for business. Those were “port-a-potties” set up and maintained by a private contractor.

Perhaps the forest service should look at a similar solution for their campsites.
