WILMINGTON- Twin Valley’s varsity boys’ soccer team improved to 3-0 with a win at Green Mountain Wednesday night, scoring four goals in the first half and one more to top it off in the second.

The Wildcats’ Nick Nilsen was the first to strike, taking advantage of a scrum in Green Mountain’s goalie box that ended with a pass from Cade Nesbitt.

Twin Valley’s second goal also came from a loose ball in the goalie box. Dal Nesbitt hit a screamer into the left side of the net at the eight-minute mark, where Green Mountain goalie Kyle Kemp had no chance to make a play.

At the 25-minute mark, Tony Tarr took a pass from Nilsen and ripped a shot hard enough to travel right through the hands and legs of Green Mountain’s goalie.

A series of headers at the 39-minute mark would continue Twin Valley’s first-half scoring onslaught, as Tarr served a head pass to Eli Park, who, at point blank range, knocked it in, making the score 4-0.

Although his team maintained a shutout in the first half, coach Buddy Hayford knew that they had to keep grinding. “The challenge for me as a coach and for the players as well is to maintain the intensity while knowing you have the game in the bag. We still played well in the second half, and had chances to score, but not with the same intensity we had in the first half.”

One of those chances was a penalty kick buried by Tarr to cap off the victory at 5-0 with 15 minutes to go. Tarr would finish with two goals and an assist on the evening.

Kyle Murdock played goalie for the Wildcats, blocking six shots and preserving his second shutout of the season.

With his team sitting at 3-0, Hayford has one goal in mind: Preparing his team for Tuesday night’s game against rival Leland & Gray. “We’re playing some decent soccer right now. Tuesday night will be a big test between two heavyweights. It’ll be feisty.”

The Wildcat boys play Leland & Gray at home on Tuesday, September 18, at 7 pm.
